Barby is an Early Education teacher in Florida. Reflecting on her financial journey, it is one shaped by lessons in responsibility, self-discipline, and determination. Her earliest money memory is vivid: watching her mother carefully count cash to pay bills. That simple yet powerful image laid the foundation for her own approach to managing expenses. Her priority is always paying bills on time.

“[this memory] helped me be responsible as I always pay all my bills.”

Whatever remains is then directed toward savings and well-earned moments of joy. Although she grew up observing her family’s financial habits, formal lessons in managing money didn’t come until her 30s. During this time, she began seeking tools and strategies, turning to resources like The Budget Mom and completing a course by Dave Ramsey.

While money wasn’t a source of concern during her childhood, everything changed in high school for Barby when she took on responsibility for household bills. This early introduction to financial accountability revealed the realities of maintaining a home. Despite the initial challenges, she persevered and developed a deep sense of financial discipline.

Goals

Today, her biggest goal is completing Public Service Loan forgiveness and then saving for her own home—a dream that motivates her work with The Beans. She is committed to making steady progress, knowing that each step brings her closer to this milestone.

Amid the challenges, her children’s happiness serves as a constant reminder of her “why.” Their joy is her joy. She is inspired to continue to make financial progress for them- knowing that her efforts today create a brighter future for the next generation.

She doesn’t have a go-to person to discuss financial matters today but she has found empowerment in her journey. By drawing on personal experiences and leveraging accessible resources, she is charting a path forward that balances responsibility and aspiration. Her story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of creating a Plan that is reflective of one’s values and gives space for joy.
